HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - Helping Families in Need

Habitat for Humanity, East King County chapter is a non-profit provider of affordable housing, working to build decent, affordable homes for families in need in the East King County area. Their mission statement is "to empower families, build community, and create hope through aggressive home-building..." Their vision is to make it possible for all residents of East King County to live in simple, decent, affordable housing through homeownership. Habitat for Humanity is a grass-roots organization which constructs homes in a self-help, homeownership program.

The East King County chapter has built 71 homes since 1988 in Bellevue, Carnation, Issaquah, Newcastle, Redmond, Sammamish and Snoqualmie, serving 77 families in the process. These 71 homes have housed 116 adults and 180 children who otherwise would be living in substandard housing. Habitat's homes are not given to these qualifying families, rather they are sold to the families at cost with 0% interest loans for repayment. Homeowners are selected based on need, ability to pay mortgage, and residence or employment in the East King County area for at least one year. Each family provides 500 hours of sweat equity as a down payment for their house, working on their home or the home of a Habitat neighbor.

When the homeowners move on, their houses are sold back to Habitat for Humanity and then resold to another qualified family, thus ensuring that Habitat homes stay affordable in perpetuity. Each Habitat home is Build Green Certified, designed to be durable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective. The East King County chapter is currently building the largest Habitat community in the Northwest in the city of Snoqualmie. You can find more information about Habitat for Humanity at
